Welcome Pack

Welcome to the London Taxidermy Academy!

We are looking forward to seeing you at your upcoming workshop. The Welcome Pack is designed to introduce you to the London Taxidermy Academy and provide useful information about our workshops.

You will learn the basics of the fine art of taxidermy in our start to finish, no experience necessary, hands-on workshops and leave with your own mounted, finished piece.

Please remember to take along miniature items of dress or decoration if you wish to follow in the footsteps of the popular Victorian art of anthropomorphic taxidermyA 'Victorian whimsy', mounted animals were dressed as people or displayed as if engaged in human activities.

Directions

The workshop is located at 8 Lant St, London SE1 1QR. We are a short walk from Borough station (Northern line, 2-3 mins walk) or London Bridge (Northern & Jubilee lines, 8 mins walk). Number 8 is better approached from the Southwark Bridge Rd or Weller St end of Lant St as a school divides the road in the middle. You may get stuck if approaching from Borough High St.

We do not have a buzzer, the bell system is for our neighbours so please just come to the main double doors when you arrive. They will be open for you.

PLEASE DO NOT RING ANY OF THE BELLS AS THIS MAY INCONVENIENCE THE RESIDENTS OF THE BUILDING!

No need to bring anything with you, we will provide all that is needed. Perhaps warm clothing is advisable as the workshop is kept deliberately cool.

How to care for your mount?

  • Over the next few days it is important to get your specimen into it's final resting position and allow a good few days to pass in warm and dry conditions to allow the specimen to set and dry out completely.
  • Doing this will ensure the specimen can hold it's own weight without unwanted movement. You can tie or prop up your specimen, whatever you need to do to get it into the position you want until the mount has completely set.
  • Over time dust or moths - taxidermy’s worst enemies might affect your specimen! So be sure to either gently brush your specimen with a soft dry brush (like a toothbrush) or give it a light blast with a hairdryer occasionally to unsettle any dust.
  • Leaving the specimen on a radiator overnight with some lavender can deter moths; the smell permeating the piece will keep moths away for a good few months and can be repeated without affecting the mounted specimen.
